The dephlegmator is a type of precooler in which partial condensation of the vapors leaving the distillation apparatus takes place. The resulting slime (condensate with a higher, relative to vapor, concentration of a less volatile component) is returned to the vessel containing the boiling liquid. Non-condensed steam, enriched in the dephlegmator with a more volatile (read: lower boiling) component, is discharged as distillate to the condenser.
