The primal was also one of the most important animals in European nature, a 'key species', as ecologists call it.

At this moment an initiative called the Tauros Program is in full swing with the intention to breed an animal that comes as close as possible to the original primal race. This with the help of the oldest cattle breeds that are still around. And then let it become wild.

The authors all have years of experience in working with the European natural heritage.

In this book they tell us the full story of the legendary primal, richly illustrated with striking photographs of Europe's best nature photographers. And with appealing drawings from Europe's most gifted illustrators.

The book is a collaborative product of the Taurus Foundation, the Ark Foundation and Rewilding Europe.

Review (s)
In 1627 the oerrund died in Europe. Thanks to modern techniques, however, it appears that the genes of the species can still be found in today's cattle breeds, so that by breeding them a cattle breed can arise with (almost) the original characteristics of the primeval cattle. In the first instance, this enormous animal has made an important contribution to the development of our environment and back-bred animals could once again have a function in modern nature management in Europe.
In this book, in pleasantly readable language, in addition to the chapters on the rise and fall of the original, among other things, explain the ecological value of grazing landscapes and attention is given to the current projects that try to breed these animals again and in to turn off nature. The whole is richly illustrated with color photographs and drawings.
Nature lovers who find the idea of a wild nature, held in check by large grazers among others, will look at this book with attention. With glossary & literature list.
