The Californian is a breeding product of the Americans. George West from California started breeding this rabbit breed in 1923. The animals were exhibited for the first time in 1929, but the breed was only officially recognized 10 years later. A few years after the Second World War, the first Californians came to Europe. In the beginning there was mainly interest from the meat industry, but later on the breed also attracted attention in sport breeding
