the Welsummer chicken

The welsummer owes its name, just like the barnevelder, to the place where they were bred, namely the town of Welsum (on the IJssel river). The animals give brown eggs with some dark brown specks.
Yet they never received the same reputation as the barnevelders, while they initially expected this. This breed lays relatively large eggs, there are hens that can produce an egg weighing about 75 grams.
It is a fairly large, quiet chicken, which can also easily loose in your yard, as well as in a run. The hens are rarely broody.

Some characteristics of the Welsumer
  • Stately hen, in the color red-partridge.
  • The welsummer cocks always have some red-brown drawings in their black breasts.
  • Strong greenhouse variety that thrives in our climate.
