North Holland Blue (Rooster)

Until the end of 1960 this breed was still fully represented in the Netherlands, specially bred for his
meat, he grew in a natural way too slow for the now growing poultry industry.
For a long time this was the meat chicken par excellence in the Netherlands, or our pride.
The meat is namely beautiful white in color, and for a meat breed gave this chicken
us also often a beautiful egg, and it is also regularly broody.
Still, all these plus points could not benefit the blue, because at the end of 1960 when the American idustrial chickens came our blue one was as extinct.
The last large breeding company of this breed was closed in 1977.
It is thanks to former employees of this industry, who found it so difficult to grow so large with mostly crippled fast-growing chickens, that they are at home on a small scale the blue
continue to breed for their own use.
Now people know this variety again, and there are already special restaurants that have placed these chickens on the menu card again.

Some characteristics of the North Holland Blue

  • It is a quiet breed, which can walk around separately but also keep well in a run.
  • They lay nice medium-sized eggs.
  • Chicks can be distinguished from their eggs immediately upon outcome.
  • The hens are always darker in color than the roosters.
